Arriving in Paris, I start learning two languages, French and drawing. In an artist’s studio, I meet Linda Demorrir, a live model. Like me, she is transgender and an immigrant. As I draft her outlines, it is also myself that I learn to draw.

导演阐述 Director’s Statement

几年前,我因爱情离开我的祖国,当时我也处在跨性别过渡时期。这个决定很激进:我来到一片新的土地,同时也迎接来了一个新的身体,两者对我来说都是未知的。我一边探索巴黎街区,一边发现了我正慢慢长出来的胡子。当时做出这两个决定时,我十分笃定,但坦白讲,一切这些变化都令我感到害怕。在巴黎,无人知晓我自哪里来、我成长的社区或者启发过我的艺术家们。

我作为一名跨性别人士的经历与此非常相似。许多人忽视了生活在传统“男人”和“女人”划分之外所隐含的特殊性。很少人真正了解什么是一名跨性别者。每当我遇见新的人,都必须解释我的身份。我就像一张草稿纸一样难以辨认,不得不一遍又一遍地重新描摹自己。

《速写》的主人公就因此而诞生:试图通过无情地重新描摹自己来尝试弄清楚他们是什么。人们总需要一个榜样、编码、记号和一个值得尊敬的人来找到自我,一个能让我们思考并成为我们想在别人眼中成为的人的人。

正因如此,我与琳达的相遇如此重要:是她让我重生。在我初到巴黎时,我正好有机会见到了她。

琳达很高,有纹身,魅力十足。我们有共同的巴西血统、移民和跨性别身份——她是跨性别女性,我是跨性别男性。我们有着相似也相反的生活经历。几乎可以说,我们的身体恰好截然相反:女性气质和阴茎,男性气质和阴道。

在琳达摆造型的绘画工作室里,我是观察者,而她是关注的焦点。此前,我从未见过一名跨性别者作为人体模特摆造型。通过在画家的凝视下展示她与众不同的身体,琳达让他们反思过时的心理观念,促使他们创造新的形象。而对我来说,当我初次开始画她的时候,我立刻体悟到了她的自由正在重塑画笔下的线条。她在我的重塑过程中给予了我力量,并激励了我。

A few years ago, love made me leave my country, while I was myself in a transition process. It was a radical decision: I arrived in a new land, but also in a new flesh, both unknown. I discovered Paris’ neighborhoods and my new slowly-growing beard hair at the same time. I had made these two decisions with much certainty, but to be fair, all such changes were frightening me. In Paris, nobody knew where I was coming from, the neighborhood where I grew up or the artists who inspired me.

My experience as a trans person is very similar. Many people ignore the particularity implied by living outside the traditional scheme divided between “man” and “woman”. Few people actually know what a trans man is. Each time I meet someone new, I have to explain what I am. As if I were illegible like a draft sheet on which I had to redraw myself over and over.

That’s where The Sketch’s main character comes from, trying to figure out what they are by redrawing themselves relentlessly. To find oneself, one always needs a model, codes, marks, and someone to look up to, someone who makes us think and become who we want to be in other people’s eyes.

That’s why meeting Linda was so important: it’s her who brought me to rebirth. I was new in Paris when I had the chance to meet her.

Linda is tall, tattooed, and charismatic. We share Brasilian origins, immigration and trans identity, her as a woman, I as a man. We’re living experiences both similar and opposite. One could almost say that our two bodies are the exact opposite of one another: femininity with a penis, and masculinity with a vagina.

In the drawing studio where Linda poses, I’m an observer and she is the center of the attention. Never had I ever seen a trans person posing as a live model. By exhibiting her outside-the-norm body to the drawers’ gaze, Linda makes them reflect on their obsolete mental construct and forces the creation of new images. As for me, I could immediately feel her liberty shifting the lines when I first started to draw her. She gave me strength and inspired me in my reconstructive process.
