T IS FOR?
T是什么?
HAOYE (Leo)
Love in Love
The short film is a love story, but more of a personal story adapted from a personal story of the director, HAOYE好野.
A lesbian (T) from an East Asian queer culture meets a girl in a supermarket with whom she falls in love at first sight. While trying to get closer to the girl, she overhears the girl describing her ideal type on the phone, which leads to T’s psychological changes and doubts about her gender identity.
The director of this film grew up in the culture of East Asia. As she grew up, she was caught in the dilemma of choosing between sexual orientation and gender identity. “Is it so easy for everyone to make a choice? Like, do girls always like dessert and boys always like meat? What about me? How do I choose?”
“Do people make choices, or do choices choose people? “
The film is part of the “Queer Across Wave” film project, a joint venture between the University of Nottingham and Queerchinauk.

HAOYE (Leo)
Leo (HAOYE)
Leo (HAOYE) graduated with an MA in Graphic Design from Camberwell College, University of the Arts London.
During her postgraduate studies, as a lesbian from East Asia, Leo began to explore the relationship between gender, queer feminism and design. She explored different design methods to tell stories to audiences and began experimenting with video as a visual expression.
After graduation she founded the queer community WhoAreU and has been collaborating with other queer, feminist communities and participating in their activities. This film is Leo’s first time directing and shooting a drama film about gender and personal identity against the backdrop of East Asian queer culture.
Director’s Statement
As a queer person growing up in the binary gender environment of East Asia, I have been caught in the dilemma of choosing between sexual orientation and gender identity while growing up. “Is it so easy for everyone to make choices? Like, do girls always like dessert and boys always like meat? What about me? How do I choose?” . “Do people make choices, or do choices choose people?”
I always thought there would be a final end point to knowing myself, but it’s always a new beginning when I’m constantly influenced by the circumstances and people around me. The protagonist of this film is a lesbian who grew up in an East Asian environment and has been constantly exploring her gender and identity, but when confronted with the person she loves, who is she really at that moment?
The film is a short black humor film with two timelines running simultaneously, expressing the protagonist’s confusion in a binary gender society through her choice of different foods.
