This film aims to illuminate the situation of marginalized individuals residing in small towns, exploring the various pressures that they face in society and their ultimate fate. Pengyu Ge is an editor and undergraduate student at UIC.

“仇恨总是错误的，但爱总不会错”。在我的朋友告诉我他的故事之后，我执导了这部影片《小城故事》。我想探讨包容，理解和爱，创作了这部短片也帮助我缓解了这些年的压抑和不解。剧中的人物徐辉在小城中生活，独特的身份被大家发现，社会中无数双眼睛都开始凝视他，人人都是审判者。他被公司辞退，被父亲不理解，当他站在人造灯光下时，灵魂才是自由的……既然说的是小城故事，所以我倾向用冷静客观的摄影风格让观众进入人物。《小城故事》这个短片标志着我的二十岁。

“Hate is always wrong, but love can never be wrong.” After my friend shared his story with me, I directed the film Small Town Story. I wanted to explore themes of inclusion, understanding, and love, and creating this short film also helped me deal with the repression and confusion I experienced these years. The character Hui Xu lives in a small town, and when his unique identity is discovered, countless eyes in society begin to scrutinize him — everyone becomes a judge. He is fired from his job and misunderstood by his father. Only when he stands under artificial lights is his soul truly free. Since this is a story about a small town, I chose a calm and objective cinematographic style to draw the audience into the character’s experience. Small Town Story is the product of my twenties.
