Sad Jokes

Sad Jokes

Joseph and Sonya are connected through a close friendship and their young son Pino, whom they are raising together. While director Joseph is working on a new film idea and dealing with the breakup from his ex-boyfriend Marc, Sonya is suffering from depression, which is increasingly pulling her out of her life. When she ends up in a clinic, Joseph must juggle not only his family life but also his artistic ambitions. In his second feature film, author and director Fabian Stumm (Bones and Names) blends a variety of emotional tones into a tragicomic reflection of reality. Sad Jokes is absurd and banal, hopeful and touching, or – like in real life – all of these things at once.

Director’s Statement

“Through Bones and Names, a new world opened up for me. It was fascinating to see how the film made its way into the public eye and gave me the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the audience. During the festival tour, I lived for several months in a kind of bubble and quickly felt the need to write in order to stay connected with myself. Alongside the many beautiful moments, I also wanted to leave room for my insecurities and fears. The result was the script for Sad Jokes. I wrote it in hotels, on trains, and in airports. I wanted to let real life flow in as much as possible and be sincere, but always give myself permission to lie and turn reality into fiction. It’s a film about endurance, about finding ways to care for the people you love, even when you’re apart. And about the ability to forgive. About how life can be cruel, funny, comforting, and sometimes all at once.

I wanted to build on the lightness of Bones and Names, to turn up the dials and let deeply sad scenes collide with slapstick moments. I’m interested in the fractures that emerge in these contrasts. It was a lot of fun to engage with cinematic humor. The comedies of Loriot, Charlie Chaplin, Ernst Lubitsch, Nanni Moretti, and François Truffaut have shaped me since I was a child. Sincerity and silliness are often closely intertwined in them, which I find very beautiful and worth telling.”
