Director’s Statement

During an in-depth study of LGBTQ stories in North Africa and Europe in the last century we discovered the untold story of Moise Zakri, an Algerian Jew who emigrated to France and opened one of the first Queer bars in the city. This is a story about the banality of evil, how a place filled with people of all genders, sexualities and ethnicities came to attract so much hate. Back then and same as today, defining people by all these attributes was and still is just an excuse to harm and kill outsiders and people who are different from society’s “mold”.

We strive to create an animated film that will be based on Moise’s experiences and the existence of his bar. And to show the shared memory of marginalized communities, the spaces they create for themselves and the means by which they preserve the memory that has been banned and erased by hetronormative society.

This short animation is meant to be theatrical and dramatic but also funny and hopeful. Moise Zekri and his community lived an incredibly remarkable life in comparison to their time and it should be told, so it inspires us and and sheds a bigger light on queer history.
