Synopsis

A London journalist returns to his birth nation Brazil in order to face one of the demons of his adolescence: the Flour Test. This ludicrous experiment was conducted during the military dictatorship in order to determine whether army conscripts were homosexual. It consisted of males being made to sit butt-naked on flour in order to measure the girth of their anus and the integrity of their morals. Sadly, this procedure is not confined to the past. Bolsonaro’s ultra-homophobic government has attempted to introduce legislation akin to the infamous test.

Director Biography

Victor Fraga is a Brazilian born and London-based writer with more than 15 years of involvement in the cinema industry and beyond. He is an LGBT writer, and describes himself as a dirty Latin immigrant. He has vast experience as a film journalist. He was previously the editor of the now defunct UK independent magazine The Film Festival Magazine (2006 and 2007) and JungleDrums (2007 and 2008). He worked as a senior writer and business analyst for The Guardian for seven years between 2006 and 2013. His writing has often been described as compelling, incisive and controversial. He believes that cinema should never be mistaken for a harmless entertainment tool. He conceived the website DMovies because he wants – together with other people in the industry – to rediscover the often neglected “dirty” aspects of cinema. He’s ready to dig deep down and get filthy anytime, and to reclaim the value of the precious gemstones of cinema in the UK, Brazil, Europe and elsewhere. He is the founder and the director of Dirty Movies Ltd (www.DMovies), the portal for thought-provoking cinema, a leading independent film publication and also production house since 2016. He direct his first film in 2021, the feature documentary The Coup d’ État Factory. The film premiered at the prestigious Havana Film festival, toured festivals around Europe and cinemas in Brazil. It was launched on VoD in September 2022, and it has since been viewed by nearly 200,000 people. He directed the short film The Flour Test in 2022.

Director Statement

Brazil was once a model for LGBT rights and around the globe. The country implemented equal marriage in 2013, before countries such as the UK and the US. We hold the biggest Gay Pride event in the world. However we also have the highest number of gay murders. Homophobia remained latent in Brazil and it showed its ugly face under the government of Bolsonaro, our openly and rabidly homophobic president. Fascists and bigots of all types (LGBT-phobias, racists, xenophobes, misogynists, etc.) found a spokesperson in Bolsonaro.

I am a Brazilian immigrant living in the UK.  So I decided that it is my duty to reveal the monstrous face of Brazil to the world. I returned to Brazil in order to face and purge one of the demons of my adolescence: The Flour Test. The Test is a grotesque allegory of Brazil under Bolsonaro, infused with the poetry of the absurd. It is shocking that history could repeat itself in such bizarre and strange ways.
